Affordable Housing Fundraising Campaign in Full Swing
Backhoes and bulldozers have been busy at work on construction of Perth’s newest affordable housing project at 63 Halton Street. Crews from the Saumure Group, the project’s contractor, have completed foundation work on the 15-unit structure located in the Perthworks neighbourhood, across from the Perth Fairgrounds. With approval of final permits, workers hope to complete the building shell before the heavy winter weather arrives. The plan calls for a 2-storey structure consisting of 11 one-bedroom units and 4 two-bedroom units.
The $4.6 million project was spearheaded by the local volunteer group CHIP (Community Housing Initiative Perth). CHIP now plays an advisory and fundraising role, with their partner, Carebridge Community Support, managing the project. Carebridge is a non-profit agency that operates nine similar buildings throughout Lanark County offering affordable housing, support for individuals with developmental disabilities, and senior services.
CHIP Co-Chair David Kroetsch is excited to see the work finally underway, stating, “To see shovels in the ground after four years of proposals and planning is really gratifying. There are over 450 applicants on Lanark County’s waiting list desperately searching for affordable housing. This project will be a modest but important step in providing safe and affordable housing for those in need right here in our own community.”
Lanark County is contributing $2.5 million in funding for the project, while the Town of Perth has donated the surplus land, valued at $190,000. Carebridge Community Support, who will own and operate the building after completion, is contributing $500,000 in the form of a cash investment and loans, while other funding sources are being finalized. The last step is a $300,000 local fundraising campaign.
CHIP Co-Chair Claire Smith says the steady support of the community has made a big difference. She explains: “We’ve come so far and now we’re in the home stretch. We’re one-third of the way to our goal, with $200,000 left to raise locally. This project is proof of what’s possible when people come together. Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to welcoming local families in need who have been waiting for a place to call home.”
The project has seen a new face added to the team, as Carebridge’s Director of Operations, Stewart MacNabb, retires after a distinguished career at the non-profit agency. His position is now filled by Alison Newson, Carebridge’s new Director of Housing.
Ms. Newson states: “I’m thrilled to join Carebridge at such an exciting time. Breaking ground on our new housing project in Perth, working alongside the amazing group at CHIP, represents not just walls and a roof, but real progress toward inclusive, affordable homes where people can thrive. I’m proud to be part of a team so deeply committed to strengthening our communities and supporting the people who call them home.”
