I didn’t know about Almonte’s well-established folk concert series before I connected with Sandy Irvin, the sister of a close friend of mine. Sandy is the current Folkus President, and she was the previous Artistic Director before I took on the role in the fall of 2023 and started to find the acts for the 2024 season. I am so grateful to have found this group of amazing people.

The Folkus Concert Series was started by music lovers here in Almonte back in the early 2000s. It has grown from humble beginnings to become a fixture of the winter season, bringing musical artists from near and far into our precious Almonte Old Town Hall. Patrons of the series get to mingle and visit and catch up with one another at each event, and the room is aglow and buzzing during the intermission between the local opening act and our headliners.

Traditionally Folkus presents a concert on the last Saturday of each month throughout the winter. These Saturdays are busy days for the committee of volunteers, but carefully curated to not overwhelm.

This season, Folkus is looking for a number of extra hands. Some of the positions are pretty light duty; others require some specific capabilities and skills. All have been created to ensure a light to modest workload, allowing the volunteers to enjoy the day and the shows, while making the experience even more pleasant and enjoyable for everyone on our team.

We have posted a half-page ad on page 8 of this issue outlining the four openings we have available. We are a laid-back, relaxed kind of committee, we trust each other to fulfil our roles, and this makes it incredibly easy to be a part of. We have outsourced the bits that had become a burden, and in the doing made concert days more pleasing than ever.

If you would like to join in and get to see all the concerts for free, please get in touch at hello@folkusalmonte.com. Otherwise we hope to see you in the audience, and stay tuned — it’s going to be a wonderful season!
