The word “journey” brings to mind two meanings: the physical act of traveling to a new place, and the personal path an individual follows over time.
In the context of an artist’s journey, this path is unique to everyone. One may have been creating since childhood; another may have found their passion as an adult. It may have been through formal training at a respected art school or being completely self-taught. An artist may have started out on one path and shifted into another over time — a photographer to a painter, a sculptor to a glass artist.
For those who appreciate taking a journey, the Fall 2026 North Frontenac Back Roads Studio Tour offers the best of both worlds — the chance to hear about the different paths taken by the many talented artists and fine craftspeople who call North Frontenac home, and the opportunity to explore the rugged beauty and fall colours of the region.
Come on the weekend of September 26–27 and visit 32 artists at 20 studio stops located along the winding back roads of this largely untouched part of Ontario. Scattered throughout the studios, visitors will find photography and alternate photography processes, a variety of glass and woodworking media, fibre and fabric arts, pottery, watercolour, acrylic and multi-media art, knife making, jewellery and natural products, and unique hand-crafted goods made from salvaged products, among others.
Visitors will meet well-established artists and fine craftspeople, as well as new and emerging ones who may be early in their artistic journey. Regardless, each artist is ready to share their unique story.
And the beauty of this studio tour is that visitors can decide the route, and which studios and artists to visit. There are a map and directions to guide visitors, but not a set path. Make it a weekend or a day trip. Visit all the studios, or only a few. It is completely up to each visitor on this self-guided tour.
More information about the participating artists and studios, as well as a map and directions, can be found at northfrontenacbackroadsstudiotour.com. The website also offers information on places to grab a bite to eat, comfort facilities along the route, and other local spots of interest.
The artists look forward to welcoming you to their studios and community for the Fall 2026 North Frontenac Back Roads Studio Tour. Come say hello!
