The Native Plants & Clay Sale returns to West Carleton on the weekend of June 13 and 14. It will feature nursery-propagated native plants suitable for Ottawa Valley gardens from Jewel Wing Gardens, as well as ferns and garden-themed stoneware pottery by Pine Ridge Studio.

Jewel Wing Gardens is a native plants nursery located near Eganville, Ontario. Owner Trish Murphy explains that all her plants are nursery propagated from ethically-sourced wild plants and seeds. She specializes in plants native to the Ottawa Valley, as well as garden-worthy wildflowers from elsewhere in Eastern North America.

Jewel Wing Gardens also specializes in plants that attract pollinators to your garden. Trish brings her seeds and plants to Farmers’ Markets, the Friends of the Farm sale in May in Ottawa, and other gardening-related events during the summer. She will be bringing a large and diverse selection of native plants to Native Plants & Clay.

While it is of course difficult to be sure which plants will be available in June, Trish is fairly confident that she will have interesting butterfly host plants such as milkweeds and hop-tree, and some hard-to-source beauties such as purple clematis, prairie crocus, prairie smoke, and eastern shooting star. Plants may be pre-ordered from the Jewel Wing Gardens availability list, which is published at Beauxarbres.ca.

On Sunday, June 14, at 1pm, Trish will lead a workshop on creating Hypertufa Troughs with native plants. Troughs and small rock garden plants will be available for sale, individually priced. Trish will demonstrate planting techniques and talk about planting media, inorganic mulches, and the care of your trough through the seasons. The workshop is priced at $30, which includes planting mix and rock mulch. Please pre-register for the workshop at jewelwinggarden@gmail.com.

Lis Allison, owner of Pine Ridge Studio pine-ridge.ca, will be hosting the event and displaying her pottery, much of which is decorated with flowers and ferns. Her special interest in ferns, especially ferns native to the Ottawa Valley, will be expressed in her fern-design mugs, bowls and serving dishes. She will have a selection of small potted native ferns for sale as well.

In addition to shopping for native plants or pottery, you may wish to enjoy a walk around Lis’s woodland garden or perhaps her Fern Trail through the woods. A guided Fern Walk is planned for Saturday, June 13 at 1pm.

Native Plants & Clay takes place on June 13 and 14 at 6114 Carp Road, from 10am to 4pm both days.
