As the final stretch of winter settles in, Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary invites the public to trade the cold for a cozy, community-driven experience. Throughout the month of March, the registered non-profit will host a series of free online movie nights, offering a unique way for people to connect from the comfort of their own homes while learning about the complex lives and personalities of chickens.

Secondhand Stories is a volunteer-run sanctuary near Perth, dedicated to providing a forever home to rescued chickens. Their mission — to inspire compassion for chickens through rescue, education, and advocacy — takes centre stage this March with a curated selection of short films and documentaries that highlight the intelligence and individuality of these often-misunderstood birds.

“The last bit of winter is often the hardest for chickens and humans alike,” says Liz Wheeler. “We wanted to create a space where folks could gather virtually, stay warm, and learn more about the beautiful chickens we rescue who bring so much joy into the world”.

The movie nights will be hosted weekly via Kosmi, a platform that allows for synchronized viewing and a live chat feature, making it a truly interactive co-watch party. No registration or tickets are required — attendees can simply join via the sanctuary’s dedicated link. They will take place weekly, starting Tuesday, March 3 at 7pm. There is no cost, and you can join at app.kosmi.io/room/chicken (no registration is required).

The March Film Lineup

The series kicks off on March 3 with a screening of Maria & The Flock by Austin Meyer and We Animals. This documentary showcases the care of 150 rescued hens and the individuality of the species. March 11 brings Cluck! Chickens Exposed (CBC’s The Nature of Things) — a look at the sophisticated social order and surprising cognitive capabilities of chickens. The final screening on March 19 features Henrietta Finds a Nest by Mercy for Animals — a heartwarming short story about the rescue of a chicken from a factory farm and her journey to peace.

For those looking to enhance their viewing experience, the sanctuary is also offering Movie Night Packages in their online shop. These kits include an adorable chicken stuffed animal and a selection of plant-based snacks, with all proceeds directly supporting the ongoing medical care and feeding of the sanctuary’s residents. About Secondhand Stories

Secondhand Stories’ mission is to inspire compassion for chickens through rescue, education, and advocacy. Located near Perth, Secondhand Stories is one of the few sanctuaries in Canada dedicated exclusively to chickens. Unlike other local animal rescues, humane societies are not equipped to take in chickens, leaving a critical gap in care. Secondhand Stories provides a safe haven for ill, injured, and homeless chickens who have nowhere else to go.
