Protecting land at the local level is one of the most meaningful ways to support biodiversity and address climate change — work that continues to grow in importance across the Mississippi Madawaska region.
On Thursday, May 28, the Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust (MMLT) will bring members together for its Annual General Meeting at the MMLT Offices (19070 Highway 7 in Carleton Place). The evening will open with a virtual presentation by Dr. Jennifer Grenz — an assistant professor and Indigenous Scholar at the University of British Columbia and author of the best-selling book Medicine Wheel for the Planet: A Journey toward Personal and Ecological Healing. With nearly two decades of experience, Jennifer’s work focuses on invasive species management, ecological restoration, science communication, and advancing ecosystem stewardship through Indigenous knowledge systems. Jennifer will share fascinating stories from her work and reflect on how community-based conservation efforts contribute to broader environmental solutions.
The meeting that follows will highlight MMLT’s work over the past year and look ahead to priorities for 2026, including continued efforts to protect ecologically significant lands and habitats. Members will also be invited to take part in the election of new directors.
MMLT’s AGM offers an opportunity not only to stay informed, but to be part of a community working to conserve the natural spaces that define the region.
