Check your calendar. Are you busy on Sunday, November 16 at 2pm? No? Here’s a great idea for a special way to spend the afternoon.

The Mississippi Mills Film Society presents Being Cyrano (Dans la peau de Cyrano) upstairs at the Almonte Legion. No driving into the city, and proceeds go to the Mississippi Mills Public Library for special programming — a great way to support the library while enjoying the company of film buffs in the community.

After his parents’ divorce, Colin, a 14-year-old boy, moves with his mother to her father’s hometown, far from where his father lives. The start of the school year is a source of anxiety for him, as he fears being bullied by his new classmates because of his difficulty with speaking.

Encouraged by his budding friendship with Maxence, a queer student, his growing feelings for his cousin Adélaïde, and the infectious passion of his French teacher, Mr. Devarseau, Colin joins the theatre workshop led by the teacher. Without his mother’s knowledge — she is intent on protecting him — he sets out to audition for a role in the group’s production of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Olivia Levy of La Presse had this to say about this lovely movie: “Colin’s (Joachim Arseguel) story is universal. His stutter is difficult for a teenager to live with; shame, fear of others’ opinions, and mockery affect his self-esteem. The director sensitively explores very contemporary themes: gender identity, parental divorce, difference, family, and returning to one’s roots.”

The film won five awards, including Best Film, at the Montreal International Children’s Film Festival, and was enjoyed by children and adults alike!
