There will be a new sound in the air this summer as musicians prepare to perform at the inaugural Tunes on the Tay music series to be held Wednesday evenings from 6:30–8:30pm at the Perth “Terrace on the Tay” riverside landing on historic Mill Street.
Local music lovers and summer visitors alike are invited to enjoy these free 2-hour open-air performances that will feature local solo artists, duos, trios and bands in a relaxed and informal setting along the banks of the Tay.
Co-organizer Brian Perkin, former owner of Lake 88.1 radio, says the music series is meant to support local artists and provide entertainment at one of Perth’s more picturesque sites. Perkin says, “The Terrace on Mill Street is a bit of a hidden gem. It’s right across from Stewart Park by the old swimming hole and features a modest stone amphitheatre. It’ll provide a great venue for artists and an attractive setting for audiences to enjoy the music. And of course, the incredible dry stack stone bridge there just adds to the ambience.”
The bridge was built for Perth’s 200th anniversary celebrations in 2016 with the help of local volunteers, Algonquin students, and master stone masons from Scotland, Ireland, the US and Canada. It serves as a focal point of the Terrace, which the Town completed in 2019.
Co-organizer Andrew McIntrye, long-time resident and sound technician for the project, says Perth Tourism is partnering with Tunes on the Tay by providing in-kind support for the 10-week series. McIntrye adds, “For the musicians, we’ll be supplying the sound system, plus promotion and set-up. And we’re working to attract local business support for the artists as well.” Most shows will include two acts showcasing a variety of musical genres, and McIntrye hopes the series will provide mentorship opportunities between experienced musicians and aspiring performers of any age.
The July line-up for Tunes on the Tay begins on Wednesday, July 1 with Sarah Foster (6:30pm) and Ompah Don (7:30pm). July 8 features the Soulfire Band from 6:30–8:30pm; July 15 sees The Rivermen (6:30pm) followed by Libby & Cal (7:30pm); and July 22 bring Three 2 Go to the stage. The 10-week series runs each week until Wednesday, August 26 unless extended by rain dates. Shows are free and the Terrace is fully wheelchair accessible.
