The Wildcats ofEastern Ontario - theHumm February 2017

Our wildcats — Canada lynx, bobcat and cougar — are magnificent and elusive creatures. It was thought that cougars had vanished from this area, but sightings have been reported and some claim that cougars are attempting to recolonize former habitat. On Saturday, February 18, the Lanark County Stewardship Council will bring Sue Morse to Lanark to conduct tracking workshops and provide an evening presentation on wildcats in Eastern Ontario. Sue Morse is a renowned expert on wildcats and heads up Keeping Track — an organization that helps people discover, document and conserve key wildlife habitats across North America.

The cougar, also known as mountain lion and puma, is Canada’s largest and most powerful wildcat. Males can reach up to two metres in length and weigh over 60 kilograms. Adult cougars have short fur that is brown or greyish (sometimes reddish) over most of the body, with a white chest and belly. They have a long, black-tipped tail and black markings on the ears and muzzle. Kittens have spotted coats until they are about six months old.

In Ontario, it is believed that cougars live in northern Ontario because of the remoteness of the habitat. However, there have been many reports from the southern part of the province. Cougars found in Ontario may be escaped or released pets, animals dispersing from western North America, native animals, or a combination of these.

Sue will lead two tracking workshops. Each one begins with a slideshow presentation on Sue’s recent research on scent-marking behaviors. Afterwards the group heads out to experience first-hand how Sue applies this knowledge in the field. The workshops take place on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19, starting at 8:30am. The cost is $30 per person, and space is limited to fifteen participants per workshop.

At 7pm on February 18, Sue will also participate in a presentation and social at the Perth Civitan Club entitled An Evening with Wildcats. Sue will present a magnificently illustrated introduction to cougar biology and ecology in a broad diversity of habitats. She’ll provide the latest on cougar sightings in the east. Her presentation will also focus on Canada lynx and bobcats. Tickets are $45, and the evening will also feature an auction, finger foods and a cash bar. For more information and tickets, visit lanarkstewardshipcouncil.ca .

This conservation fundraiser is sponsored by Lanark County Stewardship Council, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters — Zone F, and Watersheds Canada.
