Almonte Song Circle Collective
Almonte Song Circle Collective
A group of Ottawa Valley musicians meet Thursday evenings for a weekly acoustic session. From 6-7pm they try out new songs for & with each other, then 7-8pm they'll play familiar cover tunes & invite people to sing along. New musicians welcome! “What we ask of new musicians is that you be able to get through a single song or songs from start to finish in a musical way. Playing just one song in an evening is perfectly OK, but if you can’t sing on key, can’t keep your instrument tuned, or riff all over someone else’s song to the point of distraction, we sort that out." - Nathan Sloniowski.

Almonte Lectures: Is Hi-Tech Only for Rich Countries?
Almonte Lectures
Speaker: Halla Thorsteinsdottir. Enrol for Zoom. Modern technology has contributed immensely to higher incomes and longer lives in rich countries and almost all work in these countries relies heavily on the use of high tech. Low-and-middle income countries lag far behind high-income countries in harnessing technological opportunities but want to emulate rich countries and use technologies to increase their income and enhance quality of life. Many attempts to inject high tech in these countries have, however, had disappointing results. This has led some to argue that low-income countries do not need high tech but rather clean water and better access to existing traditional technologies. In this lecture I plan to consider if and how high tech can be harnessed in low-income countries to the benefit of their populations, and tell stories gleaned from examining technologies in these countries spanning a career of 35 years.

Exhibition: People & Place
Nov 1 - Dec 18, Tue-Sun, 1-4pm. People and Place grew out of a desire to support people in working on a project together yet apart during the early days of the pandemic. People and Place pays homage to the places where we feel connected to one another, and the land from which we draw inspiration and livelihood.  The tapestry was designed and assembled by lead artist Genevieve Townsend and is made up of 56 pieces completed by 50 creative people from across the Ottawa Valley. The tapestry recreates a map of the Ottawa Valley – its rivers, lakes, streams and watersheds – with each of the 56 pieces representing a section of the map.

As Dufour receives each weaver’s shape it is documented and posted to the project’s social media. To date, 864 shapes have been received from 43 countries, and a total of about 520 people have participated. The installation continues to expand as it accepts woven pieces on an ongoing basis.

Exhibition: Fate, Destiny & Self-determination
Oct 1 - Dec 18, Tue-Sun, 1-4pm. An initiative to reduce the isolation artists experienced during Covid, the installation is composed of 3 sections: left panel was created by Line Dufour, referencing the contemporary practice of tapestry; middle of irregular shapes contributed by weavers worldwide; end panel was woven by visiting participants. As Dufour receives each weaver’s shape it is documented and posted to the project’s social media. To date, 864 shapes have been received from 43 countries, and a total of about 520 people have participated. The installation continues to expand as it accepts woven pieces on an ongoing basis. Vernissage: Oct 1, 2-4pm.

Music at Mera: Ferguson/Wheatley
The folk music of Wendell Ferguson & Katherine Wheatley. Cdn Country Music Hall of Famer (2014) Wendell Ferguson has travelled the globe & accompanied a veritable who’s who in both the country & folk genres as one of this country’s most talented guitar pickers. Wendell’s zany gentle wit is in contrast to his seriously amazing guitar chops and has perhaps been best summarized as “The Victor Borge of the guitar” by Country Music News. Katherine Wheatley is no slouch on the guitar either, but this is just one component of the package she brings to the table. To quote the Old Chestnut News “Lyrically, her songs are thoughtful and reflective, sometimes funny…often poignant…Melodically and harmonically, all her songs were beautifully crafted and expertly performed. But it’s her performance of the songs that remains so memorable.” Tickets: TicketsPlease.ca
